Biography
Born in Viterbo, after completing his classical studies, he studied singing with the great Italian baritone Sesto Bruscantini.
He started a brilliant career at the age of 21 making his debut as Don Bartolo in Il Barbiere di Siviglia at Teatro Carlo Felice in Genoa, a role he later performed at the Metropolitan Opera, La Scala, Arena di Verona, Tokyo, San Francisco, Dallas, Hamburg, Toulouse, Paris (Champs Elysees) Tel Aviv and Lima; Falstaff in Torino, Seattle, Madrid; Il Turco in Italia (Don Geronio) at Teatro alla Scala and Turin and (in the role of Prosdocimo) in Monte Carlo, Parma and Bologna; La forza del destino (Fra Melitone) at the Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia, La Scala, Turin, San Francisco, Amsterdam (Konzertgebouw), Marseille, Athens; Matilde di Shabran at Covent Garden in London; Il Viaggio a Reims (Don Profondo) in Genoa; Poulenc’s Les Mamelles de Tirésias at Teatro Lauro Rossi in Macerata; Les Contes d’Hoffmann in Palermo and Rome; Il campanello dello speziale in Naples; Il marito disperato (Marchese) in Naples and Hong Kong; Battistelli’s Divorzio all’italiana – Italian premiere – in Bologna; Don Pasquale in Glasgow, Bologna, Rome and Genoa; L’Elisir d’amore in Genoa, La Scala, Toulouse, Zurich, Berlin and Beijing; Candide by Leonard Bernstein in Santa Cecilia and Genoa; Britten’s Death in Venice in Genoa, Florence and San Francisco; Il Cappello di paglia di Firenze at La Scala and in Turin; Marco Tutino’s Le braci premiered in Martina Franca and Florence; Tosca in Trento and Rovigo; L’Italiana in Algeri in Zurich, La Scala, Montecarlo and Opéra de Paris; Cenerentola in Dallas, Genoa and Barcelona; Così fan tutte in Glyndebourne, Montecarlo, Verona, Houston; Adriana Lecouvreur in Turin; Don Giovanni in San Francisco, Dallas, Verona, Bilbao; Napoli milionaria in Macerata and Cagliari; Tutino’s The Servant – world premiere – in Macerata.
He worked with important conductors such as R. Chailly, V. Gergiev, R. Muti, B. Campanella, C. Scimone, Z. Mehta, A. Zedda and directors such as D. Fo, P. Pizzi, G . Cobelli, V. Puecher, L. Wertmuller, G. Lavia, S. Vizioli, A. Arias, J. P. Ponnelle.

Since 2008, he started also an active career as a director with such titles as: Il Barbiere di Siviglia and Gianni Schicchi at the Tuscia Opera Festival; Don Pasquale in Bologna; Le nozze di Figaro at Teatro Colon in Buenos Aires; La Traviata in Bologna, Cagliari and Otzu Nikikai Opera Foundation in Japan; Paisiello’s La grotta di Trofonio in Martina Franca and Naples; Il Turco in Italia in Pavia, Como and Cremona; Il Tribuno and Der Diktator in Martina Franca; Roberto Devereux with Mariella Devia (released on cd, dvd and Blu-ray by Dynamic), Maria Stuarda and the new production of Aida at Teatro Carlo Felice in Genoa; Anna Bolena at Teatro Regio di Parma. He will also direct Anna Bolena at Teatro Carlo Felice in Genoa and has staged the revival of La Traviata at Teatro Comunale in Bologna.
Among his recent and future engagements: Rossini‘s L’Occasione fa il ladro (Martino) in Oman with the Rossini Opera Festival; L’Elisir d’amore (Dulcamara) in Macau; and his debuts in the world premiere of Marco Tutino‘s Miseria e nobiltà, as Sharpless in Madama Butterfly at Teatro Carlo Felice in Genova and as Sagrestano in Tosca in Valencia directed by Davide Livermore.
